Superintendent's Welcome!

Greetings from RSU #24,

I hope this update finds each of you enjoying the warmer temperatures.  It is hard to believe that the end of the year is quickly approaching.  Our last student day for the school year is scheduled for Monday, June 15th.  If you have a child in any of our schools,  you will hear directly from the principal in regards to end of year details.

A reminder that the District Budget Meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 27th at Sumner starting at 6:30 p.m.  If you reside in one of our nine communities, you will be able to vote on the proposed budget at this meeting.  The final step in the process is the school budget referendum held on June 9th.  The referendum vote takes place in each of our communities at the designated voting station.  The final budget information will be distributed to our communities after the District Budget Meeting and prior to the referendum and will be accessible on our website.

For those planning ahead, Sumner Memorial High School class night is Tuesday, June 2nd and graduation is Thursday, June 4th.  Sumner Middle School will hold its 8th grade promotion on June 8th.  The Adult Education Graduation is June 9th and the Adult Education Certificate Ceremony is June 10th.

Mrs. Marielle Edgecomb,  math teacher at Sumner Memorial High School, is the recipient of the 2026 Jacqueline Mitchell Award.  This award is presented annually by the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in Maine and recognizes "an outstanding mathematics educator who demonstrates a commitment to Maine's mathematical community through dedicated service" both within and outside of the district.  Congratulations to Mrs. Edgecomb.

From the Sumner Athletic Boosters:

It’s Banner Time! If you purchased a banner for the baseball/softball outfield fence to show your support for our Sumner Tigers, it’s time to renew if you’d like it hung up again this season. We have reached out via social media to most of you, but if you haven’t signed on for another year, now is the time! We will also be doing an order soon for new businesses wishing to purchase a banner to show how much you love our Tigers, so please contact Katti Meeks at the school if you’d like to participate this year. Banners are $400, renewal fee is only $125. This gets your banner hung on the baseball or softball field (your choice), plus on the soccer field in the fall. They are stored for the winter to protect them, giving you several years to show your support for not a lot of cash! Your banner also provides advertising to visiting teams as well as local fans. Contact us now to participate in the Banner Project.

Other events we’re working on include:

  • Fundraising for the Light Up the Field project. We are working to secure funding to light the soccer field, but need local sponsorships and help. The total cost to have this done professionally is $270,000, but there is an option to do some of the work locally. Please reach out if you’d like to be a part of this project and have your name added to the Donor Plaque that will be a permanent record of who helped provide this great upgrade to our facility.
  • Providing concessions all day on May 30 for the JV Baseball and Softball Round Robin. We’ll be looking for breakfast sandwiches and crock pot meals that day as the teams will be with us from 8am to 4pm. First game starts at 9am that day.
  • The first annual Walter Crabtree Basketball Tournament July 24-26.
  • The Winter Harbor Lobster Festival 5K in August. We are hoping to bring back this race as part of the festival this year. More details to come, but we’ll need lots of help, so put this on your calendar.
  • Having Lucllle’s Snack Shack open for all home softball and baseball games, both high school and middle school. We need more workers for this, and it’s an easy way to get involved. Contact Ginny Dennison at ([email protected]) if you’d like to sign up.

Thank you for supporting Your Sumner Tigers!

As always, thank you for your continued support of our schools. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
