Dear Students and Families,
Welcome back to the new school year! My name is Mrs. Haslam and I am your child’s Physical Education Teacher. I will be at the Lamoine School on Mondays 12:00 - 3:00, Tuesdays 7:30 AM - 11:15 AM and Wednesdays all day. Please note which days your child has PE:
Grades 1, 2, 3, 6, 7/8 Monday and Wednesday.
Grades K, 4, 5 Tuesday and Wednesday.
I am looking forward to an active, safe and fun year. In order to achieve this goal I ask for your support and cooperation in the following areas:
1. ALL students MUST wear sneakers that fit securely to their feet. Additionally, they must wear clothing that will allow physical activity. Recommended attire would be t-shirts, shorts, or pants that allow full motion. (No dresses, skirts, or pants that are too loose or too tight). Students not wearing sneakers or clothing that inhibits movement will be asked to walk around the gymnasium during class.
2. A signed note from a parent must be presented if a child cannot participate due to health issues.
3. Students in grades 5 – 8 must bring deodorant AND an extra t-shirt and shorts or sports pants (required for full credit on “Effort” grade) to change into before class and out of after class.
4. Students are asked to abide by the following Physical Education Rules:
Show Respect by...
* Being good listeners
* Treating others as they would want to be treated
Show Responsibility by...
*Wearing appropriate clothing
*Moving in control
*Participating and staying on task
*Using equipment appropriately
Show Kindness by...
*Being caring toward others
Show Teamwork by...
* Cooperating with others
* Being a good sport by being honest, playing fair and accepting the outcome of the game
5. The following are the consequences for not following the rules:
First offense, the student is given a “1” as a warning and will have one minute taken away from participation in the next “Game Day”.
Second offense, the student is given a “2” resulting in a “timeout” for as long as they feel is needed for them to abide by the rules. In addition they will have 5 minutes taken away from participation in the next “Game Day”.
Third offense, the student is given a 5 minute “timeout” and have 10 minutes taken away from participation in the next “Game Day”.
6. The following is the reward system for classes who follow the rules:
A “Star Chart” is in place for each class to have the opportunity to receive four stars each day, one each for following the above rules of respect, responsibility, kindness and teamwork. If no numbers were issued the class will get 4 stars. One to three numbers issued = 3 stars. Four to five numbers = 2 stars. Six to seven numbers = 1 star. More than that = 0 stars. When the class receives a total of 32 stars, they earn a Physical Education Game Day in which they vote on 2-3 of their favorite games to play for the entire class period.
Physical Education Evaluation
Students in grades K - 8 will be evaluated in the three areas of Motor Skills (Skill), Physical Fitness (Effort) and Participation, Responsibility and Behavior (Conduct). Their level of performance will be indicated as defined by the 4 point scales provided below. This will be reported to you on your child’s report card for each trimester. It is my goal to have every student work toward meeting the standard which is identified as a “3”.
Motor Skills (Skill) – The student’s ability to execute the identified task.
4 – Skills are superior. Always uses proper technique. Always applies skills correctly in game settings.
3 – Skills are good. Uses proper technique. Usually applies skills correctly in game settings.
2 – Skills are adequate. Tries to use proper techniques and sometimes applies skills correctly in game settings.
1 – Skills are weak and needs improvement. Does not apply skills correctly in game settings.
Physical Fitness (Effort)

3 – Gives good effort. Is usually self motivated to improve personal fitness.
2 – Gives adequate effort. Occasionally needs reminders to improve personal fitness.
1 – Gives poor effort. Consistently needs reminders to improve personal fitness.
Participation, Responsibility and Behavior (Conduct)
4 - Always comes to class prepared. Respectful of all, helps others when needed, fair game play, follows safety rules, treats equipment with care, models self-control.
3 - Usually comes to class prepared, is respectful, helps others, plays fair, is safe, treats equipment with care, models self-control.
2 - Sometimes comes to class prepared, is respectful, helps others, plays fair, is safe, treats equipment with care, models self-control.
