Re: Summer 2025 Asbestos Abatement Project-Floor Tiling Information

Enc: “RSU 24 Notice for No-Entry Requirements During Renovation Projects”

Please see the attached important notice regarding the asbestos abatement project taking place at Mountain View School (MVS) from June 30, 2025 through July 15, 2025.  During this time, MVS will be undergoing a renovation in Rooms 16, 18, 19, the Hallway between those rooms, Room 22A, the Nurses Clinic & closet, and closets in rooms C2 & 34.  The asbestos abatement will include the removal of floor tiles and back mastics in these areas.  This renovation will allow us to then finalize the ongoing carpet to tile project at MVS, replacing the old carpets with new, shiny, clean Vinyl Composite Tile in these spaces.  The asbestos work will be performed by Lakeside Concrete Cutting & Abatement Professionals, fully licensed by the State of Maine Department of Environmental Protection Asbestos Abatement Contractor (License #CF-0206), chosen through our competitive bidding process in April of 2025.

The abatement contractor will be implementing a plethora of regulated precautions for our safety and theirs, including but not limited to the following:

  • Constructing a three-chamber decontamination unit, installing critical barriers over doors and windows and sealing them with duct tape and poly sheeting.
  • Installing a single layer 6 mil ply wall and ceiling, covering all surfaces within the rooms/areas of the abatement;
  • Establishing control areas with “DANGER” asbestos tape and signs;
  • Installing 2000 CFM Negative Air machines to establish negative pressure to -.02;
  • Donning suits and respirators with HEPA filters, using hepa vacuums attached to floor grinders to grind edges and spots. Students and staff will see the Lakeside technicians in their hazmat suits on a daily basis. If your child is attending summer school, please take a moment to talk to your child about this so they know to expect it. Let them know that the suits are just a precaution to keep everyone safe and healthy, and there’s no reason to be scared or worried. The technicians are friendly people doing an important job, and the suits are simply part of their safety gear—like a firefighter’s uniform or a doctor’s scrubs. Reassuring your child ahead of time can help them feel calm and confident when they see the technicians at school.
  • Waste out barrels;
  • Fine cleaning containment;
  • Aggressive PCM (Phase Contrast Microscopy) samples will be run after the removal process is completed;

  • The State of Maine Department of Environmental Protection Agency will inspect the site a minimum of one time during the project;

Prior to the afternoon of Friday, June 20th, the contents of the affected rooms/areas will be moved to other areas of the school building.  Personal items in these areas will need to be taken home during this time please.

After the abatement project and until the floor company installs the tile (scheduled for the week of July 28th), the affected areas where the flooring has been removed will remain closed and off limits due to the floor being uneven and without a floor covering.  Items will be returned to the spaces after the tiling project is completed and the custodial staff have completed the initial waxing process, with an August 15th deadline in mind, sooner if possible.

Out of an abundance of caution, all summer school students and staff (including ESY students and staff) will be housed in the PreK-1 wing (each classroom has its own restroom) for the duration of the abatement project when it is completed on July 15th, entering and exiting the building through the playground entrance at the back of the building.  Meals will be served in classrooms.

Please be advised that no Facility Use Requests will be granted at MVS between June 30 and July 15, 2025, due to scheduled projects.  Beginning July 16, 2025, Facility Use Requests may be granted by Building Administrators for areas not affected by the projects.

Your cooperation and understanding will be greatly appreciated during this important project.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to one of us:  Brenda Jordan, Principal and Sally Leighton, Assistant Principal at (207) 422-3200;  Janet Jordan, Facilities & Operations Manager (207) 422-2017,Ext. 2107.

Thank you.
